THE BOY REALLY WAS too trusting.

Sef examined the gleaming straight razor in his hand. It was impeccably cared for, the metal bright and untarnished, and it had obviously been sharpened to a keen edge. And the boy had handed it to Sef as if it were nothing. The razor could probably slice a man open before he'd even realized what was happening. Or it could slit Taisce's throat from ear to ear. Sef tested the blade against his thumb and hissed when he found it as sharp as he'd expected. He licked the blood away.

"Hold very still," Sef whispered, startling the boy when his words brushed over his ear. "We wouldn't want you getting cut."

Taisce turned to glare at him but he didn't pull away. Such trust. The fact that he didn't even realize it, just showed how innocent he truly was.

Sef set to work quickly, tilting the boy's head to get a good angle at the throat, feeling like a sculptor coaxing fine marble into art. His fingers grazed along Taisce's ear, down the side of his neck, and over his jaw, the razor following. They crested the high curve of a cheek. Sef swiped his thumb over the pink lips he'd kissed last night, wiping away a trace of lather. The tiny bump at the bridge of his nose drew Sef's attention higher. He'd expected to find freckles dusting the boy's cheeks but they were a creamy unmarked tan from his recent travels. His eyes were laced with gold and chocolate brown, his eyelashes tipped with copper from the sun.

No, he decided. Instead of marble, Taisce would be sculpted from metal. Hard, unbending, but so pliant when warmed. Sef liked that image much better. He ran a hand along Taisce's neck, moving up to cup the back of his head.

"What are you doing?" Taisce asked suddenly. It was the first sign of anxiety he had shown since they began. This boy and his misguided caution. Of course he worried now that the danger was gone.

Sef chuckled. With the hand at the back of Taisce's neck, he tipped his head to the opposite side under the pretense of surveying his work. "You're the proper gentleman once more," Sef said. He stepped back quickly before he was tempted to take the boy on the floor of the bath like he'd imagined. Not that any distance could truly be called safe when he kept remembering the way Taisce arched in pleasure.

There was a mirror on the stand beside Taisce. He cast another curious glance at Sef before he picked it up, examining his face in the yellow light from the window. "You did much better than I expected."

"Thank you for that confidence, milord," Sef said dryly.

His sarcasm was left unchallenged. "I think I'd like a bath as well," Taisce mused, still running a hand along his smooth jaw. Then he turned back to Sef. "Alone. We leave in three hours time. If you have any business in this town, I suggest you finish it quickly.
